『전체성과 무한』은 타자에 대한 이해를 중심으로 그 형이상학과 윤리를 새롭게 제시되고 있는 레비나스의 주저이며 글쓴이는 그 독특함을 더하는 것이 유대주의와 깊이 연관되어 있다는 점을 조명하고자 한다. 원천적으로 부여된 분리의 삶에서 거주, 노동, 향유를 통해 주체 자신을 실현하고 타자와의 관계에서 초월적인 생산성을 지향하는 인간 중심적인 메시아주의는 그 책에서 주체성의 문제를 재점화하고 무한의 관념과 그 존재 방식을 중요하게 논의할 수 있는 관점이라고 할 수 있다. 이 글은 그 책에서 비중 있게 다뤄지고 있는 분리의 삶을 이해하고 그 반대편에 있는 전체성에 의해 편입될 수 없는 삶의 주요 요소들, 즉 거주, 노동, 향유 등을 살펴보고자 한다. 더 중요한 점은 그와 같은 분리의 삶을 배경으로 구원을 목적으로 하는 종말론적 시간관에서 이른바 생산성을 통해 드러나는 무한과 초월성의 출현방식을 검토하고자 한다. 레비나스가 말하는 무한과 초월성의 영역은 이미 자아를 떠나 초월해서 존재한다. 죽음, 출산 등은 새로운 미래로 나가도록 하는 생산성과 미지의 가능성을 열게 한다. 그에게 그 미래와 세계는 신의 보호와 구원이 존재하는 메시아적 역사관을 확인해 주지만 그 초월의 역사가 인간과 타자의 관계를 떠나 출현할 수 없다는 점에 특히 주목해 볼 필요가 있다.
Abstract
Totality and Infinity is Levinas's main work that newly presents its metaphysics and ethics, focusing on the understanding of the Other, and I try to shed light on the fact that its uniqueness is deeply related to Judaism. Human-centered messianism, which realizes the subject through residence, work, and enjoyment in a life of separation and aims for transcendent productivity, reexamine the issue of subjectivity in this book and discusse the idea of infinity and its mode of existence as important. It can be said that it is a point of view. This article aims to understand the life of separation, and examines the main elements of life that cannot be incorporated by the totality of the other side, such as residence, work, and enjoyment. More importantly, in the eschatological view of time for the purpose of salvation, in the background of such a life of separation, the method of appearance of infinity and transcendence revealed through so-called productivity will be examined. The realm of infinity and transcendence exists beyond the ego. Death, childbirth, etc. open up productivity and unknown possibilities that lead to a new future. For him, the future and the world confirm the messianic view of history in which God's protection and salvation exist, and we can pay special attention to the fact that the transcendental history cannot emerge apart from the relationship between humans and others.
