국어 학술텍스트에 드러난 헤지(Hedge) 표현에 대한 연구

본고는 국어 학술텍스트에 드러난 헤지(hedge) 표현의 양상을 고찰하고 그것이 갖는 의미를 밝히는 것을 목표로 하였다. 헤지(hedge)란 명제 내용의 판단을 유보하거나 수행성을 약화시키는 표현을 가리키는 개념이다. 헤지의 주요한 특징으로는 모호성, 공손성, 양태성 등을 들 수 있다. 그 동안 국어 학술텍스트에 등장한 헤지 표현의 유발 요인으로 지적된 것은 ‘수동태’와 ‘간접 인용’ 등이다. 그런데 실제 국어 학술텍스트를 분석해 본 결과 ‘수동태’나 ‘간접 인용’ 외에 ‘하나의, 일종의, 수, -겠-, 부정 표현’ 등 다양한 요소들이 헤지 유발에 관여함을 알 수 있었다. 헤지는 화자의 공손성의 표지로 알려져 있어 이를 사회적 약자의 소극적 언어사용 방식으로 판단하기 쉽다. 그러나 헤지는 상대와의 결속력을 강화하면서 상대를 적극적으로 설득시키는 언어사용 전략이 될 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to investigate use aspects of hedge and a motive of hedge use. Hedge is a expression of judgement reservation and performatives weakening. The characteristic of hedge is vagueness, politeness and modality. According to the existing study, primary factors of hedge induction is passive voice and quotation. But the result of analyze the Korean academic texts, many factor is abstracted. The primary factors of hedge induction are ‘hanaui(하나의), iljongui(일종의), su(수), -get-(-겠-), the infinitive mood' etc. It is said that hedge is a marker of politeness. And it is easy to think hedge a negative language. Because the weak mostly use hedge. But hedge is a positive marker that persuade a partner. It is a kind of communicative strategies. It is positive appeal device for tightening the union of reader.
