Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of ownership and control right on corporate value in Korean family firms with tunneling and propping perspective. Tunneling refers to a transfer of resources from a lower ownership firm to a higher ownership firm, whereas propping concerns a transfer in the opposite direction intended to bail out the receiving firm from bankruptcy. We use the proxy variables such as long-term supply contracts, asset and business sale, loan, and credit facilities to affiliates as wealth transfer instruments of controlling shareholder. We find as following results. First, it is confirmed that tunneling is occurred by the affiliate loan in Korean family firms. Secondly, there is no evidence that propping is occurred in Korean family firms. Thirdly, it is understood that the tunneling occurred by affiliate loan is enlarged along with ownership-control disparity. Fourth, it is found that Korean family firm’s value is declined by the affiliate loan and equity investment, and that the tunneling occurred by affiliate loan reduces firm value.
