Abstract
This study analyzed the relation of current assets and controlling shareholders’ tunneling. Current asset tunneling refers to a transfer of resources and wealth from a lower ownership firm to a higher ownership firm by the controlling shareholders using the current assets. We considered the account receivables and the loan to the related parties as current asset tunneling instruments. Our sample comprises yearly data during 2004-2016 on total 5,655 korean firms. We analyzed the relations by the 2SLS method with panel data. We found as following results. First, it is confirmed that the current asset tunneling is occurred by the account receivables to related parties. Korean firms uses account receivables to related parties as a tunnel to transfer operating performance to the controlling shareholders’ higher ownership firms. Secondly, there is no evidence that controlling shareholders uses the loan to the related parties as tunneling instrument. Thirdly, when we compare the chaebol with non-chaebol companies, we can not find the evidence that chaebol companies occur the current asset tunneling. We found that non-chaebol companies occur the current asset tunneling with account receivables to related parties.
