Abstract

This study analyzed the impacts of family firms and their characteristics on their use of debts in order to analyze Korean family firms’ decision-making in capital structure. In order to analyze the family firms’ decision-making in capital structure in terms of agency problem in depth, the sample firms classified into Strong Corporate Governance firms (SCG) and Weak Corporate Governance firms (WCG) and this study analyzed the influence relationships between the characteristics of family firms and leverage according to corporate governance using an endogenous switching regression model. The sample firms used for the analysis were 4,008 enterprises listed on the Korea Exchange (KRX), and the period of the analysis was 10 years from 2004 through 2013. To summarize the results of this analysis, family firms in Korea maintained relatively low debt ratios. In other words, the characteristics of ownership and governance of family firms affect agency problem and it is explained by the fact that the agency problem acts as a key influence factor in the family firms’ decision-making in capital structure. Thus, it can be understood that decision-making in the capital structure of family firms in Korea is made as a result of agency problem Jensen and Meckling(1976) argued.
