Abstract
This paper attempts to investigate the influence of religion on international trade in goods using modified gravity model. To avoid biased results stemming from sample selection due to zero trade flow and heteroskedasticity problem, this study used Poisson Pseudo-Maximun Likelihoood(PPML) estimation suggested by Santos Silva and Tenreyro(2006) and Heckman Sample Selection Model to estimate the effects of religion on trade in goods in 2007. Depending on estimation method and individual religion, the impact differs from one another. However, this study reveals that the combined effects of each individual religion on goods trade are trade promoting in terms of religious similiarity, religious institutional effects, and religious network effects. The extent of religious similarity, measured by combined probabilities of meeting trading partners with the same religious affiliations, are particularly more trade faciliating than colonial ties in PPML estimation. In Heckman Sample Selection Model, it is more trade creating than conventional RTAs. Religious institutional effects and religious network effects also exert positive influences on goods trade. More specifically in our Heckman Model, they are enhancing goods trade almost as much as RTAs. In summary, religion facilitates goods trade by reducing transaction cost arising from unobservable cultural and institutional differences.
