본고는 중력모형(gravity model)에 기초한 기존연구의 연장성 상에서 미국 서비스무역의 결정요인을 실증적으로 분석한다. 특히 본고는 중력모형의 이론적 예측이 실증적으로도 잘 뒷받침되기 위해서는 Heckman Sample Selection Model에 근거하여 표본선택 편의(sample selection bias)를 통제하는 것이 효과적인지를 살펴보고자 한다. 미국 서비스산업 전체에 대한 본고의 분석결과는 표본선택편의 문제 통제를 위해 도입된 설명변수 람다(λ)의 통계적 유의성이 높을 뿐만 아니라, 표본선택 편의 문제를 통제하지 않은 Freund and Weinhold(2002)의 분석결과와 달리 중력모형의 모든 설명변수 추정치가 유의하게 이론적 예측과 부합함을 보여준다. 반면 미국 서비스산업의 하위 구성요소인 금융·운송·보험서비스 등 3개 개별서비스 업종 각각에 대한 실증분석 결과는 표본선택 편의 문제 통제에도 불구하고 반드시 이론적 예측과 부합하지는 않는다. 이는 람다(λ)의 도입을 통한 표본선택 편의 문제 해소가 실증적 오류 가능성을 통제하는데 있어 일반적으로 효과적이지 않다는 것을 의미하기보다는 표본선택 편의 문제 해소만으로 서비스무역 결정요인에 관한 이론과 현실 간에 존재하는 괴리를 줄이기에는 서비스산업의 이질적 특성이 크다는 사실을 시사하는 것으로 해석함이 바람직하다. 한편, 미국의 서비스산업 전체와 개별 서비스 업종에 대한 각각의 분석 모두에서 해외직접투자가 공통적으로 미국 서비스무역의 주요 결정요인인 것으로 파악되었다. 이는 정보기술(IT) 발전에도 불구하고 서비스무역 활성화를 위해서는 여전히 공급자와 수요자 간 물리적 대면 및 상호작용을 통한 현지화가 무엇보다 중요하다는 사실을 보여준다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the determinants of US services trade using traditional gravity model. We particularly examine the effectiveness of controlling sample selection bias by employing the Heckman Sample Selection Model to empirically establish the theoretical expectations of gravity model. Based upon the results obtained in the estimation of the US services trade as a whole, lamda(λ) controlling sample selection bias is statistically significant, and all the explanatory variables seem to be statistically consistent with the theoretical model. This contrasts with those research outputs without controlling sample selection bias such as Freund and Weinhold(2002). Meanwhile, estimation outputs of sub-industries such as financial, transportation and insurance under US services industry are not entirely compatible with the theoretical anticipations even with controlling sample selection bias. These mixed outputs indicate that introducing lamda(λ) only is not enough to reduce the gap between theoretical and empirical forecasts on the determinants of services trade,which seems to stem from the heterogeneity of services industry. It is worth noting that foreign investments turn out to be a critical factor in promoting services trade, irrespective of recent rapid development of IT technology. It means that commercial presence rather than cross-border supply still works as a focal facilitator of services trade through localization, i.e., physical proximity of suppliers and users of services.
