Abstract

Bongguk-sa Temple in Jeongreung is a historic temple with over 700 people and is well-known as a prestigious temple in Seoul. First, Bongguk-sa Temple in Jeongreung is known to have been founded by Master Monk Naong in 1354, the third year of King Gongmin's reign. However, it can be said to have been completely rebuilt by Court Monk Muhak in 1395, the fourth year of King Taejo's reign. Second, it was rebuilt in 1468 (the 14th year of King Sejo's reign), and it is also possible that this temple was rebuilt in 1669 (the 10th year of King Hyeonjong's reign) during the renovation of Jeongreung, the tomb of Queen Sindeok (神德王后), King Taejo's second wife. Third, the wooden seated Sakyamuni Buddha statue of Bongguk-sa Temple (奉國寺 造釋 迦如來坐像) shares many similarities with the style of early Joseon Buddhist statues, making this inference plausible. Fourth, while the remaining relics of the Ksitigarbha Ten Kings statues in the Myeongbujeon Hall of Bongguk-sa Temple (the statues of Lord Domyeong, Mudeokgwiwang, and Gwiwang) do not have a construction date, a considerable number of sutras remain. These sutras date from the 16th and 17th centuries, indicating that they were deposited in the late Joseon Dynasty, in the 17th century. Since these are highly likely constructed in the 17th century, it is presumed that Bongguk-sa Temple was rebuilt in that period. Fifth, the hanging Buddhist painting was completed in 1892, and the rear Buddhist paintings in the Myeongbujeon Hall were completed in 1885 (the painting of the Ksitigarbha Ten Kings) and 1898 (the painting of the Ten Kings and their attendants), marking a significant redevelopment of Bongguk-sa Temple. Sixth, for the relics from the time, the plaques hanging behind the Manwolbojeon Hall and the Myeongbujeon Hall indicate the history of their reconstruction. Seventh, a large-scale reconstruction project is currently underway with the head monk, Hyeon Geun, taking office of the temple reappointed.
