Abstract
The wooden Sakyamuni Buddha statue at Bongguk-sa Temple in Jeongreung is considered to be of great significance for several reasons, dating back to the early 15th century, in the early Joseon Dynasty, when Bongguk-sa Temple was founded. First, the wooden Sakyamuni Buddha statue at Bongguk-sa Temple is considered significant because it is likely the only example dating back to the founding of Bongguk-sa Temple in 1395 during the reign of King Taejo. Second, the wooden Buddha statue at Bongguk-sa Temple clearly displays iconographic characteristics of early Joseon Dynasty (1392-1506), such as a long cylindrical shape and Ω-shaped folds. Third, the wooden Buddha statue at Bongguk-sa Temple reflects the early Joseon Dynasty Buddhist style, and is believed to date from the fourth quarter of the 15th century (1475-1500) or around 1500. Fourth, a large number of Buddhist vestments were discovered. While the Huryeongtong (traditional Buddhist container) and the original inscription are missing and unidentifiable, the discovery of a sheet of Buddhist donation, four volumes of the Yenyeom Amitabha Doryang Chambeop, three copies of the 17th-century Myobeop Yeonhwagyeong (Lotus Sutra), and nine dharani (sacred dharani) provides valuable data for the study of the Buddhist statues and vestments of Bongguk-sa Temple. Fifth, the wooden Sakyamuni Buddha statue from Bongguk-sa Temple is a life-size Buddha statue of great significance for the study of Buddhist statues from the early Joseon Dynasty (1392-1506). Therefore, if confirmed as an early Joseon Dynasty statue, it should be designated as a National Cultural Heritage and carefully preserved.
