Abstract

The Stone Ksitigarbha and Ten Underworld Kings statue in Bongguksa Temple in Seoul came to attention in 2024 at an academic conference to highlight Buddhist art in Bongguksa Temple. From the 17th Century of the Joseon Dynasty, a large-scale reconstruction Buddhist art was carried out due to the war, and the statue of Myeongbujeon(冥府殿) was created nationwide. This article considers the meaning of sculpture history in the Joseon Dynasty by paying attention to the Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple, which can examine one aspect of the period of the revival of Buddhist art in Korea. When Myeongbujeon was rebuilt in 1898 due to the fire of the temple in 1882, the Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple is believed to have been re-enclosed the existing statue of Myeongbujeon or transferred to a local temple. The Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple is ranked 30th in total, consisting of 1 Ksitigarbha, 1 Monk Domyeong(道明尊者), 1 Mudokguiwang(無毒⿁王), 10 Ten Kings of Underworld(⼗王), 2 Taesanbugoon(泰⼭府君), 2 Spirit King(⿁王), 2 Court Official of Underworld(判官), 7 Buddhist Boy(童⼦), 2 Divine messenger(使者), and 2 Divine Warrior(將軍). When it comes to the composition of the Myeongbujeonjon statue, it is relatively large in quantity. A total of 103 cases and 767 pieces of Bokjang Relics[Enclosed Relics] were collected from from four statues. The Bokjang Relics are mainly composed of scriptures, and only a part of them are handed down as Huryongtong(候鈴筒)[Throat-Bell Container] and Darani(陀羅尼). The scriptures are large in quantity and vary in types, and most of them were published in the 16th century and are considered to be of great significance as academic data. The iconographic characteristics of the Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple are not much different from those of the 17th century stone Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. However, the phoenix is engraved on the official hat of King Mudokgui, the angry face of the 6th king, and Buddhist Boy with braided hair showed creativity. The stylistic characteristics of the Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple are detailed and flexible, revealing a cheerful aesthetics. The Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple is similar in that it is stately and rigid, which is the characteristic of the Buddha statue of stone sculptor Seung-ho(勝浩) in the fourth quarter of the 17th century, but developed its own style on the burly body and small lips with a rectangular smile. The Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple is a stone Buddha statue made of stone and will also be an important material for the study of stone Buddha statues that were popular in the late Joseon Dynasty. The Buddha statue of Bongguksa Temple is consistent with the lower limit of the scriptures of clothing artifacts around 1684, so it can be compiled into the fourth quarter of the 17th century after 1684. This article alone is not enough to infer the writer of composition, so I would like to leave future research on the writer as a task.
