Abstract
The stone seated Bhaisajyaguru(藥師) Buddha enshrined in the Manwolbojeon Hall(滿⽉寶殿) of Bongguksa Temple(奉國寺) exhibits a similar style to the stone seated Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of Heungguksa(興國寺) Temple in Namyangju and the rock carving triad of the Tejaprabha Buddha(熾盛光佛) at Sammaksa Temple(三幕寺) in Anyang. The Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of Heungguksa Temple is said to have originally been enshrined at Bongguksa Temple, and records indicate that it was regilded in 1707 after being moved to Heungguksa Temple. This suggests a connection between the two temples, not only visual but also historical. The Sammaksa Rock-carved Buddha dates back to 1763. This suggests that the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of Heungguksa Temple was created at least before 1707. While the exact date of its transfer remains unknown, the current Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of Bongguksa Temple is believed to be a new statue created at Bongguksa Temple after its original was moved to Heungguksa Temple. While grotesque and traditional stone Buddha statues likely coexisted independently in the 16th century, expressions that appear to fuse these two styles, such as the Seated Stone Bhaisajyaguru Buddha at Bongguksa Temple, likely emerged in the 17th century. Of course, even if the gilding on the Stone Bhaisajyaguru Buddha at Heungguksa Temple was actually done in 1707, its relocation could have occurred much earlier. If so, the date of the current Bhaisajyaguru Buddha at Bongguksa Temple could be even earlier. However, if the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha at Heungguksa Temple was already popular as the principal Buddha at Bongguksa Temple before its relocation, its enshrinement there would not have been so short. A cross-comparison of the stylistic judgments of statues and the histories of these two temples suggests that the founding of Heungguksa Temple in 1567 represents the upper limit date for the relocation. Furthermore, since this Buddha statue was regilded at Heungguksa Temple in 1707, the lower limit is around 1707. However, since it would have been difficult to relocate the statue after 1669, when Bongguksa Temple was rebuilt as the main temple of Jeongneung Royal Tomb(貞陵), it is highly likely that it was moved before 1669. Furthermore, given this relocation, I surmise that the current Bhaisajyaguru Buddha statue was likely created around the 1669 reconstruction. Therefore, these two statues share some similarities and differences, as the original and the copy are somewhat dated, and the materials used are different: the zeolite and the granite. So they represent a rare example of a stone Buddha statue being created in imitation, making them of exceptional historical value.
