Abstract
This study conducted petrographic analyses of whetstones recovered from Goryeoperiod shipwrecks and terrestrial archaeological sites to identify their material characteristics and to examine their functional and cultural significance. The dataset comprises nine specimens, including four from shipwrecks(Mado Shipwreck no.1, Mado Shipwreck no.2, Wando Shipwreck, and Anjwado Shipwreck) and five from sites in Boseong, Jangseong, Gokseong, and Yeosu. The results confirm that all specimens are sandstone, composed primarily of quartz and feldspar. Measurements of specific gravity, porosity, water absorption, and surface hardness fall within similar ranges, indicating no significant differences between shipborne and terrestrial contexts. However, certain specimens(Hy-13452 from the Anjwado Shipwreck and Gj-46256 from the Boseong Hodong site) exhibit relatively high porosity and absorption values, suggesting possible differentiation in their use across grinding and polishing stages. Geochemical analysis further reveals that the whetstones span compositional categories of wacke and arkose sandstones, implying selective utilization of different sandstone types depending on functional requirements. Distinct use-wear traces are evident on specimens from Mado Shipwrecks no.1 and 2(Ma-1023, Ma-1347) and the Anjwado Shipwreck(Hy-13452). The Mado whetstones display worn and slightly curved central grinding surfaces, alongside fine linear striations on their reverse and lateral sides, indicating dual functions as both coarse and finishing stones. By contrast, the Anjwado specimen shows less extensive surface wear but more concentrated striations, suggesting specialized or auxiliary use for fine edge adjustments rather than prolonged grinding. The archaeological contextdiscovery in galley areas rather than cargo holds-supports their interpretation as tools essential for maintaining knives and small cutting implements during long voyages. This study represents the first petrographic investigation of Goryeo-period whetstones. It establishes a foundation for future research, including quarry provenance studies and experimental archaeology to validate functional interpretations, and provides essential baseline data for comparative studies of whetstones across different periods and regions.
