Abstract

Previous studies in underwater archaeology have primarily focused on ship structure, cargo, and maritime history, while archaeological approaches to shipboard life have remained relatively underexplored. In response, this study closely examines the composition and spatial characteristics of shipboard life-related artifacts excavated from ancient Korean shipwrecks, followed by a comparative analysis with contemporary terrestrial sites and later-period ships. The assemblage of shipboard artifacts from Goryeo-period ships largely includes items related to cooking and storage, such as iron cauldrons, iron kettles, earthenware steamers, one or two large ceramic jars, bamboo baskets, bronze spoons, combs, and whetstones. In particular, large ceramic jars with a capacity in excess of 100 liters have been identified in a number of shipwrecks, including one jar each from the Sipidongpado, Wando, and Mado No. 1 shipwrecks, two from the Mado No. 2 shipwreck, and one from the Daebudo No. 2 shipwreck. A comparison with contemporary terrestrial sites reveals that while land-based dwellings, as long-term residential spaces, offer advantages in terms of the sheer quantity and diversity of remains, they are limited by the poor state of preservation and less clearly defined artifact assemblages. This highlights the importance of comparative analysis with shipboard contexts, which serve as complementary data sources. Notably, based on the volumetric limitations of large ceramic jars stored on ships, this study estimates the potential duration of sea voyages. By applying existing research on total water storage capacity, daily water consumption per person, and estimated crew size, it is surmised that ships could remain at sea for approximately ten days. This offers meaningful insights into the navigation range of Goryeo vessels and the intervals between their ports of call. Furthermore, a comparison with Joseon and modern Korean ships confirms the continued use of the third compartment as the primary living space. Based on the Mado No. 4 shipwreck, a shift in the location of this space from the foremast to the aft section has also been observed. With the continued accumulation of excavation data and research, integrated studies of contemporaneous terrestrial and underwater sites are expected to further contribute to our understanding of everyday life during the Goryeo period
