Abstract
This study reviews international research trends regarding stone artifacts recovered from marine environments and discusses their academic significance and future directions for related research in Korea. Since the late twentieth century, underwater archaeology has developed from the technical excavation of shipwrecks to become a comprehensive discipline that interprets human-marine interactions within social, economic, and cultural contexts. Within this shift, underwater stone artifacts have gained importance as key pieces of evidence for reconstructing the navigation practices, shipping operations, trade, daily life, and ritual practices of past maritime societies. As anchor stones, ballast stones, stone structures, and stone tools all possess great durability in submerged settings, they preserve crucial information on ship architecture, navigation techniques, and interregional exchange networks. Recent studies increasingly incorporate scientific and experimental approaches, such as use-wear analysis, experimental archaeology, 3D scanning and digital reconstruction, thereby broadening both the scope and depth of research. Building on these developments, this study outlines the theoretical and methodological foundations for investigating underwater stone artifacts and highlights the need for systematic analysis and comparative research in Korean waters. Ultimately, it seeks to demonstrate the potential of stone artifacts to provide new insights into maritime cultural history.
