Abstract

This study explores the historical origins and development of traditional East Asian tortoiseshell crafts, whose raw materials are derived from endangered sea turtles, within the context of studies on marine culture in the Anthropocene. Emerging around the second century BCE, these crafts utilized the carapaces and plastrons of various species of sea turtles including the hawksbill, green, and loggerhead. Over the centuries, tortoiseshell became a prized luxury material. However, its popularity led to the overexploitation of sea turtles, ultimately resulting in their current endangered status. Although international trade of sea turtles was banned under CITES in 1975, illegal harvesting and trafficking persist. As natural supplies declined in the nineteenth century, substitutes for the natural tortoiseshell were developed. Since the early twentieth century, many imitations made of the synthetic plastics replaced those luxury goods made with natural tortoiseshell materials. Ironically, plastics, once conceived as an ideal new material and alternative, have become a major cause of marine pollution in the Anthropocene, once again endangering sea turtles through ingestion and habitat contamination. The extinction risks faced by sea turtles today reflect a broader nexus of human greed for luxury goods, the climate crisis, and oceanic pollution. As the world’s sea turtle populations continue to dwindle, the tradition of tortoiseshell crafts also faces an inevitable decline. In the Anthropocene, the essential task for this craft tradition is to move beyond its dependence on natural tortoiseshell and reconfigure itself as an environmentally responsible artistic practice that seeks sustainable coexistence between man-made materials and marine ecosystems, with particular regard for sea turtles and their animal rights.
