본 연구는 조선 초기 조운선인 마도 4호선에서 출수된 숫돌의 채석산지를 규명하기 위해 수행되었다. 마도 4호선은 1417년에서 1425년 사이 나주 영산창에서 출발한 조운선으로, 선체에서 공물로 적재된 숫돌 27점이 발견되었다. 기존 연구에서는 이 숫돌의 채석산지가 전라도 나주목의 여석산으로 추정되었으나, 이를 확인하기 위해 여석산 숫돌 채석지의 구성암석에 대한 물리적, 광물학적, 지구화학적 분석을 진행하고, 그 결과를 마도 4호선 출수 숫돌과 비교하였다. 분석 결과, 여석산의 주요 암석은 석영사암과 규암으로 구성되어 있으며, 석영과 운모가 주요 광물로 나타났다. 반면, 마도 4호선 숫돌은 장석질 사암으로, 석영, 알칼리장석, 사장석을 포함하고 있어 두 암석 간 재질적 차이가 확인되었다. 이를 통해 마도 4호선에 적재된 숫돌의 채석산지가 여석산일 가능성은 낮다고 판단되며, 조선시대 관찬 사료에 기록된 보성 지역이 유력한 채석산지로 추정된다. 본 연구는 마도 4호선 숫돌의 채석산지 규명에 기여할 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공한다.
Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the provenance presumption of the whetstone discovered in the Mado shipwreck no.4, a grain transport ship from the early Joseon Period. The Mado shipwreck no.4, which set sail from the Youngsan tribute granary between 1417 and 1425, contained 27 whetstones loaded as tribute. Previous research presumed the provenance of these whetstones to be Mt. Yeoseoksan in Najumok, Jeolla Province. To verify this, we conducted physical, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses of the rocks from the whetstone quarry on Mt. Yeoseoksan and compared the results with the whetstones found on the Mado shipwreck no.4. The analysis revealed that the main rocks from Mt. Yeoseoksan consist of quartz sandstone and quartzite, with quartz and mica as the primary minerals. In contrast, the whetstones from the Mado shipwreck are arkose, composed of quartz, alkali-feldspar, and plagioclase, indicating a material difference between the two. Based on these findings, it is concluded that the likelihood of Mt. Yeoseoksan being the provenance of the whetstones loaded on the Mado shipwreck no.4 is low, and the Boseong region, recorded in official Joseon Dynasty documents, is considered a more probable source. This study provides foundational data that contributes to the identification of the provenance of the whetstones from the Mado shipwreck no.4.
