Abstract
This study examines the fishing culture of Masan Bay during the Samhan and Three Kingdoms periods by comparing fishing tools and catches excavated from local archaeological sites with those documented in the book Uhae-Ieo-Bo First, an analysis of the fishing patterns based on the excavated fishing gear and catches revealed the use of various tools, including barbed fishing hooks, seine nets, casting nets, harpoons, and tridents. The target species included both brackish-water shellfish and large migratory fish. Among shellfish, oysters were identified as the predominant species, alongside various species of clams, including meretrix, macoma, mactra, ruditapes, and ark shells. As for fish, the findings not only included such species as pufferfish and sea bream, but also large species such as sharks, which is particularly notable. Comparison with the Uhae-Ieo-Bo confirmed the presence of many of the same aquatic species at the archaeological sites, and also suggested the historical use of fishing methods such as jukbangnyeom and tongbal, as well as raising the possibility that a wide variety of marine resources were harvested. The primary characteristic of fishing in the Masan Bay area during the Samhan and Three Kingdoms periods was its emphasis on inland water fishing and the exploitation of tidal flats. This pattern is supported by both the habitat distribution of the excavated species and the records in Uhae-Ieo-Bo . In conclusion, it appears that ancient fishers in Masan Bay conducted specialized fishing activities by taking advantage of the bay’s unique enclosed environment and the natural ecosystem of the tidal flat.
