Abstract
The ancient writer Plutarchos wrote in his biography of ‘Lucullus’, that Clodius’ seditious speech in the city Nisibis of Armenia during the winter in 68-67 B,C. caused dramatic turn in Lucullus’ campaign of the East and brought him military and political crisis. But Plutarchos wrote his ‘Parallel Lives’ with the intention to give his readers interest and moral lesson, and for the purpose he often distorted the truths. His narrative about the speech is an example of his distorted writings, and in that narrative, he made use of Clodius as a foil, in order to describe Lucullus as he wanted. Lucullus’ expedition of the East started in the spring of 73 successfully. As time passed, however, Lucullus fell into military and political crisis, and when he and his army were quartered in Nisibis, his soldiers, discontent with his severe treatment, were on the verge of revolt and refused his command. Despite of his military ability, Lucullus seems to have spoil the advantageous situation of the war, due to his hastiness which was caused by his political crisis. He was, as an advocate for Sullan political reforms and a conservative nobilis, did not care for the welfare of his soldiers and Roman commercial interests in Asia Minor. Such a impractical attitude was one of the main causes that drove him into military and political crisis.
