클로디우스의 초기 경력을 대체로 살펴 볼 때, 그는 전형적인 귀족 엘리트 젊은이가 공직에 나가기 위하여 걸었던 전형적인 길을 걸었다고 할 수있다. 비록 초년 시절에 아버지를 여의었지만 그는 유서 깊은 귀족 가문의배경 하에서 가족과 친인척의 직간접적인 도움 하에서 군 경력을 쌓았고, 로마 시에 귀환해서는 역시 정치인으로의 정규적인 입문 방식인 유명 정치인에 대한 기소인으로 등장했다. 또한 군 경력을 통하여 친분을 쌓은 무레나의 콘술직 선거운동을 도우면서 정치 무대에서 자신의 세력을 키우고자노력한 것도 자연스러운 과정이었다고 할 수 있다. 클로디우스의 초기 경력을 두고 ‘선동정치가’의 단초를 찾으려는 시도는 적절해 보이지 않는다. 비록 주목할 만한 공직 경력 상의 성공을 거두지는 못하였으나, 그는 정상적인 엘리트 귀족의 공직 경력 코스를 따라서 활동하면서 자신의 정치적입지를 확보하고자 노력하였다고 할 수 있다. 이렇게 볼 때 후일 키케로가 여러 연설문에서 했던 클로디우스의 초기경력에 대하여 했던 여러 가지 비방의 말들은 ‘보나 데아 추문 사건’으로정적으로 떠오른 클로디우스를 무분별한 선동정치가로 매도하기 위하여나온 말로서 상당부분 근거가 없는 것으로 비판되어야 한다. 또한 그리 성공적이지 못한 클로디우스의 초기 경력에는 당시 로마 정치 분위기에서유력 귀족 가문의 젊은이가 느꼈을 여러 부담감과 성공에 대한 강박관념 등이 반영되어 있는 것으로 생각된다. 이것은 엘리트 귀족에 의하여 주도되었던 고대 로마 정치의 또 하나의 특징이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
During his early career, Publius Clodius Pulcher followed the formal course that the many young people of noble families had pursued. Early in his life, he lost his father, but his family did not decline in wealth and the reputation of his eminent family, the Claudii Pulchri, was unchanged. Against such a brilliant family background Clodius could start his early career smoothly, though during that time he could not have achieved remarkable results. Therefore the argument that Clodius displayed from his early career period, the disposition of a demagogue can not be sustained. As a result of the ‘Bona Dea’ scandal in 61 BC, Cicero and Clodius became formidable foes to each other and from that time on, Cicero spoke ill of Clodius in his many writings. Cicero described the prosecution of Catiline by Clodius and the trial of Murena by Sulpicius Rufus, which all took place during Clodius’ early career. But his descriptions and appraisals of Clodius in these events changed before and after 61. That is, after 61 BC, Cicero slandered Clodius irrationally, saying that he was a base fellow and pursued the way of a demagogue. But Cicero’s accusations were groundless and they reveal the weakness of Cicero’s writings as reliable evidences of history.
