강원지역 개신교 의료선교와 독립운동 : 감리교회와 의사독립운동을 중심으로

Abstract

This paper examined the historical origins and backgrounds of the Protestant Medical Missionary Church, especially the Methodist Church in Gangwon Province, not just providing medical services to the general public in the community, but also being an important base of the independence movement at home and abroad. Since the opening of the port, medical missionary work in Gangwon Province has been in poor financial and environmental conditions, and it has been a difficult situation since the colonial period due to the expansion of public hospitals established by colonial authorities. Medical missionaries worked on a rotation in the church's precincts, which caused hospitals to experience temporary stagnation. On the other hand, human networks were formed around Earl Willis Anderson(1879-1960), who mainly worked in Gangwon Province, and various figures used the medical missionary network to use missionary hospitals as outposts for the independence movement of medical doctors. Unlike Ahn Sa-young, a graduate of the Severance Union Medical College and a member of the North Methodist Episcopal Church, who worked alone in Swedish Methodist Hospital at Wonju, Kwak Byeong-gyu, Lee Won-jae, Lee Byung-cheon, and Song Chun-geun, who graduated from Severance Union Medical College are based in different regions such as Chuncheon, Gangneung and Wonsan. Wonsan Salvation Hospital was a midpoint connecting with overseas independence movement strongholds such as Haeseong Hospital in Vladivostok and Korea Hospital in Harbin. Through here, Lee Won-jae, Lee Byung-cheon and Park Jung-sik served at Korea Hospital in Harbin, while Kwak Byung-kyu and Song Chun-geun served at Haesung Hospital in Vladivostok and at Korea Hospital in Haenam district. In short, despite the dire situation of implementing medical missionary work both in person and financially, Gangwon Province has formed a strong network of connections against the backdrop of Christian and religious backgrounds of South Methodist Episcopal Church, school ties of Severance, and personal relationships, which led to active participation in independence movements not only in Korea but also abroad.
