Abstract
The purpose of this study is to propose a semiotic methodology that, through a systematic analysis of Taepyeongmu, groups the conflicting meanings among the dance movements and analyzes them into a binary structure of denotative and implied meanings. Then, by presenting the implied meaning, derives a metalanguage. This is because a more objective and systematic methodology is needed to interpret traditional dance. To conduct this study, the researchers utilized a humanities-based research method based on previously reviewed literature. First, by examining the external binary structure of Taepyeongmu, it is divided into movements such as raising the Hansam (both arms) and lowering the Hansam (both arms), spreading the arms outward and bringing the arms inward, moving movements and staying movements, moving diagonally and turning in a circle, taking small steps and taking slow steps, and inhaling and exhaling movements. This oppositional structure of external meanings is also evident in the connotative meanings: the oppositions of Shinmyeong and Han, Yang and Yin, reality and the afterlife, unraveling and tying, and cosmic principle (Li) and vital force (Qi). Taepyeongmu, which contains opposing elements within a single whole, is seen to conflict and fuse together to form a unified whole. This can be defined as a metalanguage (prayer for blessings, 祈福) within the semiotic meaning of Taepyeongmu.
