Abstract
This study aims to empirically examine the reality and the specific experiences of human rights violations faced by practical dance students during their entrance exam preparation process and to highlight the need for improvements within their educational environment. A survey was conducted among 271 practical dance students in the Seoul metropolitan area to identify instances of human rights violations, and to investigate the types of violations, the characteristics of perpetrators, and the frequency of occurrences. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with six students who reported experiences of human rights violations to explore each individual case in greater detail. The findings revealed that students were continuously exposed to various forms of human rights violations, including infringements on the right to health, entrance exam corruption, violence, and sexual harassment. Notably, excessive control over appearance and body shape, unfair practices between instructors and evaluators, and verbal abuse by instructors and senior students emerged as significant issues. These violations are not merely problems of individuals, but stem from the structural and cultural limitations of the practical dance education field, indicating an urgent need for institutional reform and changes in perception. This study is significant in that it brings the human rights issues of practical dance entrance exam students into public discourse and provides foundational data for building a human rights-centered educational environment, while also increasing the transparency of the entrance examination system to foster a healthy artistic ecosystem.
