본 연구는 왁킹댄서들이 디스코 음악을 어떻게 체감하고 해석하는지를 탐색하고, 이러한 음악적 경험이 왁킹댄스 실천에 어떤 방식으로 스며들고 있는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 왁킹댄스를 지속적으로 수련해온 댄서들을 연구 참여자로 선정하여 심층면담을 진행하였고, 수집된 자료는 반복적 정독과 코딩을 통해 의미 있는 경험의 단위들을 도출하고, 주제화 과정을 거쳐 분석하였다. 연구참여자들은 디스코 음악을 단순한 배경음악으로 인식하기보다, 움직임을 유도하고 감정을 환기시키는 주요한 자극으로 받아들이고 있었다. 디스코 음악 특유의 리듬과 분위기는 왁킹댄스의 움직임 속에서 신체 감각과 정서를 일깨우는 요소로 작용하였으며, 이는 춤에 대한 몰입, 정체성의 강화, 창의적 표현으로 이어지는 흐름 속에서 의미화되었다. 본 연구는 왁킹댄서들의 구술을 통해 을 드러내며, 예술 실천안에서 음악이 지닌 감각적·정서적 역할을 재조명하고자 하였다.
Abstract
This study investigates how waacking dancers perceive and interpret disco music and how these musical experiences are intricately woven into their dance practice. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with dancers who have consistently trained in waacking, and the collected data was systematically analyzed through repeated readings, coding, and thematic categorization. The findings indicate that participants do not regard disco music merely as background sound; rather, they perceive it as a pivotal stimulus that evokes both movement and emotional response. Specifically, the distinctive rhythms and vibrant atmosphere of disco were found to activate bodily sensations and emotional states, thereby enhancing dancers’ engagement with their practice. Furthermore, disco music appears to play a significant role in fostering immersion, identity formation, and creative expression within waacking. Collectively, the dancers’ narratives underscore the close connection between disco music and waacking dance, illuminating the sensory and emotional functions of music in shaping artistic experience.
