Abstract

It was born out of the criticism that traditional preaching was no longer engaging or relevant to contemporary listeners. According to the New Homiletic, traditional preaching is preacher-centered based on the authority of the preacher, and idea-centered preaching with no regard for the various genre of the Bible or the way the listeners listens. In opposition to traditional preaching, the New Homiletic embodied listener-centered preaching. In their quest for listener-centered preaching, the proponents of the New Homiletic viewed preaching as a conversation and the listener as a partner in preaching. In preaching as a conversation, the listener does not passively listen to the sermon, but rather actively participates in the sermon and experiences it personally. Instead of the traditional task of preaching to teach biblical content, assuming that the modern listeners are already familiar with the biblical content, the scholars of the New Homiletic sought to provide an experience for the listeners in preaching. In order to provide an experience, they developed a variety of sermon forms, along with an awareness of the literary genres of the biblical text. Based on this new and extended understanding of the listeners, the New Homiletic breathed new life into contemporary preaching. However, by overemphasizing the role of the listener in preaching, the listeners are not understood as the church obeying the Word of God, but rather as individual listeners who have the freedom and right to draw their own conclusions. Furthermore, the experience that the New Homiletic seeks to provide through preaching is a personal experience that happens to each individual listener. Finally, the New Homiletic overlooks the close relationship between preaching and the church community which has been the centerpiece of the Reformed tradition, and emphasized individual listener-centered preaching.
