Abstract
This project is an attempt to suggest a new approach to the Korean homiletics for the next generation who call for faith-seek-understanding as well as transformation of their lives in terms of preaching the gospel. The project suggests evangelistic preaching as a wholistic form of preaching for strangers because most preaching in the Christian church today is done before them. To prove this argument that evangelistic preaching in a pre-Christian age has much to tell the preachers who live in a post-Christian age, and the ultimate effectiveness of preaching to the strangers rests on the power of the gospel. the project begin with theological reflections on the forms of preaching which has been used by the Korean pulpits since 20th century. The theological reflections are focused upon the following questions: What were the cultural contexts of the listeners which challenged to contemporary pulpits? What were the preachers’ responses to the challenge for the new forms of preaching? And what was the theological evaluation of the alternative forms suggested by the pulpits, which exchanged the old forms of preaching? As historians of preaching have observed, at strategic moments preaching has responded to changed cultural situations, and new sermon strategies have replaced old forms, revitalizing the preaching ministry. In the earliest history of Korean preaching, the old forms of argumentative preaching with Aristotelian basis and argumentative and authoritative tone for the first generation failed to reach the contemporary audience. The "new homiletic" for the second Korean generation, which is a generation old now, recognizes that narrative forms of apologetic preaching could not communicate effectively with the children of those listeners whom we were attempting to address with revitalized sermons a generation ago. These children, unlike their parents, have grown up in a post-Christian culture that is not familiar with the Bible. Furthermore, many Christians today do not know the basics of the Christian message. This change in the cultural situation is crucial to recognize, and it creates special challenges for preachers who must proclaim the gospel to the strangers to God’s stories now with evangelistic preaching.
