후기 새로운 설교학의 등장에 관한 연구

본 연구는 귀납적, 이야기, 전개식 설교 등으로 대표되는 '새로운 설교학' (the New Homiletic) 이후에 등장한 북미의 설교 담론인 '후기 새로운 설교학' (a Post-New Homiletic)의 등장을 소개한다. 1958년 헨리 그래디 데이비스 (Henry Grady Davis)의 유기적 설교 (organic preaching)로 시작된 새로운 설교학은 전통적 설교와는 달리 청중의 자발적 결단을 통한 삶의 변화를 목적으로 한다. 무엇보다 청중이 복음을 전인적으로 경험하도록 다양한 전달 방식들을 시도한다는 점에서 이들은 일종의 ‘새로운 수사학’ (a new rhetoric)이다. 그러나 새로운 설교학은 설교의 전달 방식과 청중의 반응을 설교의 주된 의제로 삼음으로 현대 설교의 담론을 수사적 효율성 (a rhetorical effectiveness)으로 편중 시켰다. 이러한 새로운 설교학의 한계를 극복하려는 움직임이 1997년 몇 몇 설교 학자들에 의해 시작되었다. 루시 로즈 (Lucy Atkinson Rose)와 찰스 캠블 (Charles L. Campbel), 메리 케더린 힐커트 (Mary Catherin Hilkert)로 시작된 '후기 새로운 설교학' (a Post-New Homiletic)은 새로운 설교학의 수사적 효율성에 희생된 기독교 복음의 고유성과 설교의 신학적 진정성을 회복하고자 한다. 한 마디로, 이들은 설교학의 담론의 방향을 ‘수사학’에서 ‘신학’으로, 설교의 ‘효율성’에서 ‘진정성’으로 전환한다. 이는 일찍이 어거스틴이 기독교 설교에 대해 논한 바, 설교의 핵심은 설교의 수사학적 기교가 아니라 하나님의 지혜의 선포임을 재천명하는 것이다. 후기 새로운 설교학은 먼저, 새로운 설교학의 한계로서 성경 해석의 설교자 중심성, 인간 경험을 통한 보편적 계시 이해, 복음의 피상성과 모호성, 설교의 시장성에 따른 신학의 부재성, 후기 기독교 사회에서의 부적합성 등을 지적하면서 자신들의 담론들을 제시한다. 또한 후기 새로운 설교학은 신학에서 설교의 수사 방식을 가져온다는 점에서 ‘신학적 수사학’ (theo-rhetoric)으로 명명할 수 있다. 신학적 수사학의 세 가지 주요 담론들은 공동체의 대화, 기독론적 서사, 설교의 신학적 형태 (theo-moves)로서 율법과 복음의 신학 등을 들 수 있다. 본 연구를 통해 한국 설교의 향후 과제와 방향을 내다볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This study is to introduce a Post-New Homiletic which appeared after the New Homiletic movement represented by new paradigms such as inductive, narrative, and phenomenological preaching, etc. Emerging with Henry Grady Davis' organic preaching in 1958, the New Homiletic, unlike traditional homiletics, focuses on the transformation of hearers' way of life through their voluntary response to preached stories. And, one may name the New Homiletic a "new rhetoric" in that it intends new and diverse sermonic forms in order to bring the wholistic experience of the gospel to the hearer. However, the New Homiletic has the hearer's response and sermonic language and forms as its main concerns, so that it carries contemporary discourses of homiletics away to rhetorical effectiveness. In 1997, some homileticians came to go beyond the rhetorical homiletic's limitation. Lucy Atkinson Rose, Charles L. Campbell, and Mary Catherin Hilkert launched new discussions for a post New Homiletic. A Post-New Homiletic orients homileticians to the restoration of the particularity of the christian gospel and the theological authenticity of preaching that have been sacrificed by the rhetorical effetiveness of the New Homiletic. In a word, a Post-New Homiletic arose to shift the main topic of contemporary homiletics from "rhetorics" to "theology," and from "effectiveness" to "authenticity" of preaching. It can be learned from Augustine's homiletic thesis, which argues that the main concern of the christian preaching is not on its rhetorical art, but on God's wisdom to teach. For this study, a Post-New Homiletic discloses the New Homiletic's limitation to be overcome, such as preacher-centered interpretation of the Bible, the universal understanding of revelation through human experiences, the superficial and ambiguous naming of the gospel, the decrease of theological sense of preaching resulting from the marketing strategy for the hearer, and the lack of consideration of contemporary post-Christendom world. One thing that should be noted is that a Post-New Homiletic is a "theo-rhetoric" in that it brings the rhetorical form of the sermon from theology itself. The main issues of a Post-New Homiletic can be summed up in three: communal dialogue, the Christological narrative, and theology of law and gospel as a theo-moves of preaching. In effect, this study helps Korean preaching to prospect its theological task and direction henceforward.
