강해설교와 내러티브 설교의 이분법을 넘어서

초록

강해설교와 내러티브 설교는 각각 전통적 설교학과 신설교학을 대표하는 설교방식으로 여겨졌다. 그동안 이 두 설교학적 진영 사이의 갈등으로 인해 두 설교 방식은 서로 양립불가한 것으로 이해되었다. 신설교학자들은 청중에게 해석학적 자율성을 부여하는 민주적 설교의 대척점에 설교자 중심의 권위주의적이고 전제적이며 계몽적인 강해설교가 있다고 묘사했으며, 전통적 설교학은 강해설교야말로 진정한 성경적 설교라고 주장하며 내러티브 설교를 청중영합적 기교로 평가절하했다. 그러나 최근 북미설교학계에서는 양자의 장점을 취하고 약점을 보완한 통합적 설교를 지향하는 움직임이 생겨나고 있다. 이는 복음주의 설교학자들와 주류 설교학자 모두에게 공통된 현상이다. 본 논문은 이러한 새로운 설교학적 움직임을 살펴보고 이것이 한국교회 현실에 어떤 의의가 있으며 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지를 살펴보는 작업이다. 이를 위해 먼저 강해설교학자들이 내러티브 설교를 수용하여 내러티브 강해설교 혹은 강해적 내러티브 설교를 만들었다는 것을 살펴본 후, 토마스 롱, 폴 스캇 윌슨, 제니퍼 브룩스 등 북미 주류설교학계에 속한 학자들이 어떻게 강해설교적 요소를 수용하는지에 관해서 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 통합의 움직임은 북미교회의 교인이탈 현상에 대한 설교학적 대응이었는데, 이는 심각한 탈교회 현상을 경험하는 한국교회에도 적용가능한 시사점들을 던져준다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 필자는 성경 본문의 문학적 장르, 청중 구성, 설교자의 신학을 고려하여 다양한 설교 상황에 적합한 통합적 성경적 설교를 제안한다.

Abstract

Expository preaching and narrative preaching are the homiletical methods in which each represents the Old Homiletic and the New Homiletic. Until now, these homiletical methods have been considered incompatible due to the conflict between those homiletical groups. While the new homileticians put the preacher-centered authoritarian monarchial and enlightening expository sermon in opposition to the democratic sermon that allows listeners hermeneutical autonomy, the traditionalists underestimate narrative sermon merely as a technique to enchant listeners, arguing that expository sermon is the genuine biblical preaching. However, recently a new wave in which one pursues integrative preaching that takes advantage of positive aspects from both and discards the disadvantages has emerged in North American homileticians, commonly among the evangelicals and the mainline school. This article attempts to investigate this new homiletical movement and delve into how it can be applied to Korean churches. For this purpose, it examines firstly that expository preachers have created narrative expository sermon or expository narrative sermon in the application of narrative sermon to expository sermon, and then how the homileticians of the mainline school, including Thomas G. Long, Paul Scott Wilson, and Gennifer Brooks, have applied the elements of expository sermon to narrative sermon. I argue that this new movement of homiletical integration was a homiletical response to the drastic de-churching in North America, which casts out a couple of application points to the Korean churches that are experiencing the same issue. On the basis of the discussion above, the author proposes an integrative biblical preaching that seeks to preach adequately to the diverse preaching context in consideration of diverse literary genres of the biblical texts, diverse listeners, and the homiletical theology that the preacher persists.
