Abstract

This study empirically examines how economic policy uncertainty affects firms' short-term financial strategies, particularly accounts receivable and accounts payable. Using the Economic Policy Uncertainty(EPU) index developed by Cho and Kim (2023), which extends the methodology of Baker et al. (2016), the analysis reveals that higher policy uncertainty significantly reduces firms’ trade credit activities, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and net trade credit ratios. Specifically, a one standard deviation increase in policy uncertainty leads to an average decrease of 1.45% in accounts payable and 4.66% in accounts receivable. These effects are consistently confirmed through robustness checks, including Tobit regression analysis. Furthermore, the impact of policy uncertainty is found to be not only immediate but also persistent for up to one year. During periods of economic downturn—defined as the Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic—the negative impact of policy uncertainty on trade credit is found to be more pronounced, particularly in accounts payable. This study highlights that macroeconomic shifts, such as increases in policy uncertainty, have sustained effects on firms' short-term financing strategies and inter-firm trade credit practices.
