최근 몇 년 동안 심화되는 지정학적 긴장으로 인해 전 세계적으로 무역정책 불확실성(TPU)이 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 무역정책 불확실성이 한국 기업의 수익성에 미치는 영향을 조사하며, 특히 기업의 수출 의존도에 따라 무역정책 불확실성의 영향이 달라질 수 있음에 초점을 맞추었다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 2000년과 2019년 사이 한국, 미국, 중국의 TPU 지수와, 기업 수준의 재무 데이터를 활용하여 각 국의 TPU가 한국 기업의 수익성에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, 대외 의존도가 높은 기업일수록 더 큰 재정적 불안정을 겪는지 여부를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, TPU의 증가는 기업의 수익성에 부정적인 영향을 미치며, 특히 해외 시장 의존도가 높은 기업일수록 이로 인하여 수익성에 더 큰 타격을 입는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, TPU의 산업별 차별적 영향을 분석한 결과, 저기술 산업이 고기술 산업보다 무역 정책 충격에 더 취약하다는 점이 확인되었다.
Abstract
In recent years, the intensifying geopolitical tension has heightened trade policy uncertainty (TPU) worldwide; this study investigates the impact of TPU on the profitability of Korean firms, focusing on their level of export dependence, and using firm-level financial data and TPU indices from Korea, the United States, and China, analyzes how TPU affects corporate profitability and whether firms with greater export dependence experience greater financial instability, revealing that increased TPU negatively influences firms' profitability, with companies more reliant on foreign markets suffering greater financial setbacks, and highlighting the differentiated impact of TPU based on industrial characteristics, as low-tech industries are more susceptible to trade policy shocks than high-tech industries.
