Abstract
Corporate trade credit is a type of short-term debt. Since the past, many companies have used their trade credit to raise short-term financing. In general, it is known that company’s trade credit is used by acting as substitutes when it is difficult to use short-term borrowings.Other studies have suggested that companies with problems with credit constraints due to the problem of credit allocation are more likely to use business credit than to use short-term borrowings. In another study, it was argued that the credit of a company should be good, so that more trade credit can be provided. This study intends to examine whether the corporate trade credit increases or decreases when the credit risk of companies increases, that is, when the credit rating deteriorates. This problem is in fact empirical, and the theoretical background that can explain this is due to information asymmetry. The regression analysis of the random effects panel was conducted using data from 2001 to 2017 for non - financial companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange. As a result of the analysis, first, it was found that there is a negative relationship between the increase in corporate credit risk and the demand for trade credit of companies. If a company's credit risk increases, it may be difficult for the company to use trade credit. Second, the higher the profitability of a company, the higher the demand for trade credit between companies. In view of these two situations, from the perspective of a trade credit provider, when judging the target company, if the company's credit risk is high, it gives less trade credit, and if the company is profitable, it can give more trade credit.
