Abstract

This paper describes how the conditional forms of the Japanese locutionary act verb iu (“say”)—ieba and iuto—have lost their verbal autonomy and developed into complex sentence adverbs expressing the speaker’s attitude toward the hearer. Following the previous study (河 2025), which examined the speaker’s epistemic and evaluative stance toward events, the present study focuses on the speaker’s attitude toward the hearer. Various complex sentence adverbs consisting of ieba and iuto are classified according to the speaker’s attitudinal orientation. For instance, expressions such as 「実をいえば」(“to tell the truth”) indicate the speaker’s intention to disclose something potentially embarrassing or blameworthy, and expressions such as 「簡単にいえば」(“simply put”) illustrate an effort to rephrase content that may be unfamiliar or difficult for the hearer to understand. Thus, these expressions carry not only attitudinal meaning but also performative and rhetorical functions directed toward the hearer. In comparison with the sentence adverbs derived from the conditional forms of the vision verb miru (“see”), which denote the speaker’s evaluative perspective toward events, ieba and iuto differ in that they inherently presuppose interaction with the hearer and have developed into forms specialized in pragmatic and rhetorical functions.
