Abstract
This study examines cases where the conditional verb forms ieba and iuto, conjugated from iu (“to say”), undergo lexicalization, losing their original lexical and grammatical properties as a verb and developing into adverbial expressions that indicate the speaker’s attitude. In particular, this study aims to classify the compound sentence adverbs in which ieba and iuto appear as components of speaker-attitude markers. We classify the attitudes conveyed by sentence adverbs into three categories: (1) the speaker’s epistemic stance toward events and entities, (2) the speaker’s evaluative stance toward events and entities, and (3) the speaker’s mode of delivery toward the addressee. Focusing on the first two categories-the epistemic and evaluative stances toward events and entities-the paper identifies the relevant expressions and analyzes their patterns of use. The lexicalization of ieba and iuto into the aforementioned types of adverbial expressions can be attributed to the lexical characteristics of iu. Fundamentally, spoken interaction involves an interaction between a speaker and a hearer. On the one hand, speakers recognize and describe their understanding of reality through cognitive processes; on the other hand, they shape their statements with an awareness of the hearer. This dual nature of spoken interaction influenced the way compound sentence adverbs evolved, shaping the differentiation of their types.
