Abstract
This study empirically examines the impact of urban growth types on changes in carbon emissions in the Chungcheong region by classifying urban growth into infilling, edge expansion, and leapfrog types using landcover maps from 2013 and 2023. Land-cover data were reconstructed into a 100-meter grid to ensure temporal consistency, and newly developed built-up areas were delineated as patches based on spatial contiguity. Urban growth types were identified using growth classification index of Xu et al.(2007) while carbon emission changes were calculated using building energy consumption data from the national carbon-space mapping system. The results indicate that edge expansion areas exhibit significantly higher increases in carbon emissions compared with both infilling and leapfrog areas, a pattern that was consistently supported by the Games-Howell post-hoc test. In contrast, no statistically significant difference was found between infilling and leapfrog types. Increases in the number of workers and the proportion of industrial land were major drivers of carbon emission growth, suggesting that internal regeneration-oriented growth patterns are relatively advantageous in mitigating emission increases. By linking urban growth processes with carbon emission dynamics using a process-based classification, this study provides empirical and policy-relevant insights into how urban expansion structures influence the pursuit of carbon-neutral development.
