Abstract
This study analyzes the spatial distribution patterns and influencing factors of carbon emissions using high-resolution data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Carbon Spatial Map System, targeting 3,436 administrative districts (eup, myeon, dong) across South Korea. Regional analysis showed contrasting characteristics: large cities have the lowest per capita emissions (6.1 tCO2e) but the highest emissions per area (55,473.8 tCO2e/km²), while rural areas (myeon) have high per capita emissions (17.6 tCO2e) but low emissions per area (1,433.8 tCO2e/km²). Exploratory spatial data analysis revealed distinct spatial clustering patterns of carbon emissions that transcend administrative boundaries, with a Moran's I value of 0.429 (p<0.001) confirming strong spatial autocorrelation. Spatial error model analysis identified that the number of businesses (β=0.497), living population (β=0.333), aging index (β=0.178), and population (β=0.125) have positive effects on carbon emissions, while total floor area (β=-0.078) has a negative effect. The findings provide scientific evidence for region-specific carbon reduction policies, including low-carbon economic activities, compact urban development, and establishment of regional carbon reduction governance.
