Abstract
Within the gender binary system, many trans men are recognized not as “trans men” but simply as “men.” However, in order to blend into society and avoid drawing attention, they often remain hypervigilant, constantly adjusting their bodies during everyday interactions out of fear of being perceived as deceptive or marked as someone who does not truly belong. This article understands medical transition as a process that reveals long-term bodily conditioning under gender norms. It examines how habitual self-surveillance is inscribed in trans men’s bodies and how this leads to a gradual exhaustion. Gender norms operate not only through visual appearance but also through postures, gestures, and movements—forms of habitual regulation that constrain bodily potential. In this way, repeated self-surveillance underlines how the “invisibility” of passing does not equate to relief but becomes a source of tension and fatigue.
