Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivations for which transgender individuals decide to undergo gender-affirming surgery and the processes of change, adaptation, and growth they experience after surgery, and further to explain in detail how these experiences lead to both internal and external growth. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 transgender individuals who had completed sex reassignment surgery, and the data were analyzed using grounded theory methods. Through the analysis, 81 concepts, 23 subcategories, and 12 categories were derived. The core phenomenon identified in the transgender individuals’ experiences of sex reassignment surgery was “ambivalent emotions and experiences regarding sex reassignment surgery.” According to the paradigm model based on this, the growth process surrounding sex reassignment surgery was identified as four stages: “the stage of searching for myself in confusion,” “the stage of resistance and acceptance of identity,” “the stage of integration of ambivalent emotions,” and “the stage of new departure.” In the final stage, it was confirmed that discomforts at the personal and social levels coexist in a cyclical manner, but through the acceptance of reality, these lead to personal growth. The study results are significant in that they provide basic data for suggesting future counseling approaches and shed more realistic light on the unique circumstances of transgender individuals by understanding their gender affirming surgery experience as a process of psychological adaptation and growth rather than a simple physical change.
