이 글에서는 서구 여성운동 및 한국사회에서 등장한 트랜스젠더배제적 급진페미니즘(Trans Exclusive Radical Feminism) 혹은 젠더비판적 페미니즘(Gender Critical Feminism)의 담론에서 나타나는 트랜스여성에 대한 인식 및 재현, 그리고 이러한 인식과 재현의 근저에 작동하는 ‘젠더’ 정치학의 문법을 탐색하고 나아가 이에 대한 비판적 독해를 시도한다. 트랜스여성을 ‘여성공간’에 대한 침입자나 규범적 여성성을 재생산하는 반여성적 행위자로 재현하면서 ‘여성으로 태어난 여성’을 페미니즘의 이유이자 자격으로 구성하는 트랜스젠더배제적 급진페미니즘, 젠더비판적 페미니즘, 혹은 ‘랟펨’의 정치학에는 구조와 규범으로서의 ‘젠더’와 구별되는 체현된 정체성과 삶의 영역으로서의 ‘젠더’의 가능성을 인식하지 못하거나 부정함으로써 트랜스젠더를 인식불가능한 영역으로 배치하는 ‘젠더박살’의 문법이 자리하고 있다. 트랜스젠더의 경험과 자기서사는 체현된 정체성이자 삶의 과정 및 가능성으로서의 ‘젠더’를 가시화하면서 트랜스젠더배제적 급진페미니즘에 대한 비판적 독해의 자원을 제공한다.
Abstract
This article provides a critical reading of the discourse of TERF or Gender Critical Feminism which originate from the 1970’s radical feminism and returned since 2010s, in a more popularized form. To begin with, I examine the social background of TERF and its discursive formation. The discourses and narratives of trans-exclusionary radical feminism represent trans women as intruders into women’s space or those who reinforced normative femininity. Underlying this misunderstanding or misrepresentation of transwomen is the radical feminist gender politics in which gender only refers to structure and norm, rendering embodied identity that (trans)women enact illegible. To critically counter the ‘gender’ discourse of trans-exclusionary radical feminism and/or gender critical feminism, I turn to current transgender and feminist studies of embodiment, discourse, and matters.
