Abstract
The purpose of this article is to understand the aspects and meaning of early Korean science fiction, focusing on science fiction published in the student magazines “Hakwon,” “Boys' Life,” and “Children's New Friends” published in the 1950s. As a result of analyzing science fiction published in student magazines, this paper was able to draw two conclusions. First, in science fiction in the 1950s, a dystopian view of monsters appearing due to the fear of atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs or the destruction of mankind is strongly revealed. In early science fiction published in student magazines in the 1950s, atomic bombs are repeatedly represented as violent images of monsters and destroyers that will lead to the end of humanity, indicating that they maintained a critical attitude different from the aspect of being silent about 'atomic bombs' in literature for adults. Second, in science fiction in the 1950s, the awakening that human greed and snobbery can lead to human extinction is revealed as a dystopian worldview. Human greed and snobbery are symbolized as a hellish place where monsters invade the global village. Even in a narrative that expands space into space, human greed and snobbery are the source of destruction and death. In this way, science fiction published in student magazines in the 1950s is characterized by the dystopia of early Korean science fiction. When it comes to literary imagery and detailed scientific description, short science novels published in student magazines in the 1950s, which were the barren grounds of Korean science fiction, are lacking in literary imagery and detailed scientific descriptions. Nevertheless, if the literature for adults in the 1950s was silent about atomic bombs, the science fiction in student magazines was sensitive to the fear of atomic bombs and the fear of human extinction. It can also be meaningful in that it captures the fear of future scientific development in a dystopian world from a critical point of view.
