Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspects and meaning of science fiction, focusing on science fiction published in the student magazines “Hakwon”and “Science for students” in the 1960s. Through this, this paper was able to confirm the following two facts. First, keywords such as ‘attack’, ‘invasion’, ‘invasion’, ‘war’, and ‘space’ frequently appear in the science fiction in “Hakwon”. This appears as the fear of ‘war’, and the enemies that must be eradicated at this time are represented as ‘monsters’, ‘alien’, and ‘monsters’. Above all, advanced science and technology are important to fight the enemy. Therefore, science fiction in the 1960s dreamed of a future in Korea where advanced science and technology developed. At the same time, it can be seen that science fiction wished for Korea to have strong power to suppress war on the Korean Peninsula. Second, keywords such as ‘Cold War’, ‘Scientific Patriotism’, ‘War’, ‘Anxiety’, ‘Fear’, and ‘Advancement of Science’ frequently appear in science novels published in ‘Science for Students’. This symbolically reveals that the global village in the 1960s was an ‘unruly’ space where various conflicts and problems such as the Cold War, war, food, population, and race overlap. Therefore, science fiction in the 1960s emphasized the world of technology utopia through advancement of science. On the one hand, science fiction revealed a critical gaze through the imagination of escaping the unstable ‘Earth’ due to the horrors of the Cold War. As such, scientific novels in the 1960s show a variety of imaginations between ‘space development’ and ‘advancement of science’ of the horrors of ‘war’ and ‘cold war’. In addition, scientific novels enlightened adolescents by dealing with practical problems such as food, population, energy, and climate change along with scientific knowledge.
