이 글은 경판본 <흥부전>과 신재효본 <박타령>을 비교하여 흥부와 놀부의 인물 성격 변화를 알아보았다. 전통적으로 흥부는 선인, 놀부는 악인으로 구분되며 권선징악의 도식을 형성했지만 시대의 변화에 따라 그구도는 해체되었다. 이러한 변화의 원인을 신재효가 살았던 조선 후기의사회경제적 전환에서 찾는다. 유교적 윤리가 해체되고 자본주의가 대두되던 시기 신재효는 새롭게 형성되는 가치 체계를 반영하여 흥부와 놀부의 성격을 재구성하였다. 경판본이 도덕적 선악 구도에 따라 인물을 평면적으로 형상화한 반면, 신재효본은 자본주의 이행기의 현실을 반영하여 인물의 동기와 행위를입체적으로 묘사한다. 특히 놀부는 물신주의적 가치관을 내면화한 인물로, 흥부는 유교 윤리를 내면화했으나 현실성과 실천력을 상실한 인물로그렸다. 결말부에서 흥부가 놀부를 포용하고 재산을 나누는 장면은 물신주의의 갈등을 해소하고 공동체적 연대를 회복하려는 서사적 장치로신재효가 당대의 윤리적 갈등과 감정 구조를 조율하려 했음을 보여준다. 신재효본은 단순한 개작이 아닌 변화하는 사회 구조와 감정 윤리를 서사적으로 반영한 작품으로 평가할 수 있겠다. 이 글은 신재효본 흥부전을 통해 인물 성격 변화의 이면에 내재한 물신주의와 도덕 감정의 교차를밝히고, 조선 후기 사회의 가치 충돌이 문학에 반영되었음을 알아보았다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the transformation of character traits in Heungbujeon by comparing the Gyeongpan edition and Sin Jae-hyo’s Bak Taryeong. While previous studies have noted a tendency in the Sin Jae-hyo version to soften Nolbu’s negative attributes and diminish Heungbu’s virtues, this study locates the root of such changes in the socio-economic shifts of late Joseon society. As Confucian ethics lost ground and capitalism emerged, Sin Jae-hyo restructured the narrative to reflect new value systems. Whereas the Gyeongpan edition depicts the characters in a simplistic moral dichotomy, the Sin Jae-hyo version presents a more nuanced portrayal. Nolbu is reimagined as a figure embodying fetishistic materialism, while Heungbu remains a moral idealist aligned with Confucian values but lacking practical agency. The concluding scene—where Heungbu forgives Nolbu and shares his wealth—serves to resolve tensions rooted in material desire through moral sentiment and communal empathy. Ultimately, Bak-Taryeong reflects not merely a literary adaptation but a narrative embodiment of shifting value systems. This study reveals how the interplay between fetishism and moral sentiment underlies character transformation and expresses the broader conflict of values in late Joseon Korea.
