(How to Steal a Dog) 을 분석했다.

Abstract

This paper explores the story of a fragmented family through the experiences of a child with divorced parents. We often encounter statistics about divorce in various papers and news articles. Typically, if we are not personally affected, we tend to view such issues with detachment. However, we are already aware that many children are growing up in single-parent households. In fact, we often fail to notice the subtle prejudices that children of single parents may face. This paper emphasizes the importance of understanding and gaining insight into children in such situations. The researcher analyzes the emotional experiences of children in literature using the Cannon-Bard theory, which posits that emotional cognition, feeling, and behavior occur independently and that physical and emotional changes happen simultaneously. The researcher focuses on two works of children’s literature: Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary and How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O’Connor. These stories feature one or more children from broken families and illustrate how they endure difficult circumstances. However, rather than depicting these experiences in a heavy or overly serious tone, the stories are told in a humorous and engaging way, which evokes laughter. Secondly, despite the challenges faced by these divided families, the narratives demonstrate that the characters still pursue a sense of purpose in life. Through this paper, the reader is encouraged to shift their perspective on families affected by divorce, approaching them with a more positive and compassionate outlook. The psychological responsiveness of children experiencing divorce can occur simultaneously and unpredictably. While emotions are natural to all humans, they are often difficult to express in ordinary situations— and even more so in complex, emotionally charged ones. For this reason, the researcher intends to further analyze these texts in relation to child development, particularly focusing on how the impact of divorce varies according to different age groups.
