Abstract

This article examines Margaret Sanger’s ideas on reproductive control through the concept of ‘control’ during the early twentieth century. Sanger who contributed to raising the issue of conception as a social concern during the early twentieth century was a controversial figure because of her radical actions and eugenic perspective. Sanger was criticized for her immense influence on undermining the birth control movement despite her contribution to the development of feminist rhetoric and strategies. However, contrary to existing belief that her actions and ideas were contradictory, Sanger’s idea of ‘control’ was consistent throughout her development. Considering this context, this paper tries to comprehend how Sanger’s individual desire to control developed into a form of social and political control by looking into Sanger’s concept of control in the birth control movement.
