본고는 오늘날 현대를 살고 있는 크리스천들의 음악적 삶의 현상과 앞으로나아가야 할 방향에 대해 재조명하고자 했다. 젊은세대를 중심으로 한 크리스천들의 음악문화를 (1) 니체의 사조로부터 현대까지 이어진 음악관의 영향과 (2) 찬송가 쇠퇴 현상, 그리고 (3) ‘영적 침체 현상’을 분석하고 연결해 문제제기를 한다. 또한 본고의 주제로 이끌기 위해 존 파이퍼가 정립한 ‘크리스천 헤도니즘’ 사상의 용어적 의미와 당위성에 대해 논하며, 크리스천이 추구해야 할 기쁨의 본질에 대해 정립한다. 이어 찬송가에 나타난 크리스천 헤도니즘의 의의와 중요성에 대해 논지를 펼친다. 크리스천의 삶의 진정한 만족감과 행복이 어디에서 오는지에 대해 깨달을 수 있는 강력한 통로로서의찬송가 찬양을 강조하며, 니체의 ‘음악적 삶’에 맞설 크리스천 찬송의 신학적 본질과 중요성에 대해 비교분석하여 정리한다. 따라서 본고는 현대의 크리스천 문화의 위기를 그들의 ‘음악문화’를 통해 살펴보고, 그들의 예배와삶 속에 ‘찬송가를 부르는 것’이 성경적이며 올바른 선택이 될 수 있다고 주장한다.
Abstract
This study reexamines the current state of musical life among contemporary Christians and explores the direction it ought to take. Focusing particularly on the younger generation, it critically analyzes the Christian musical culture through three lenses: (1) the influence of philosophical perspectives on music from Nietzsche to the present day, (2) the decline of traditional hymnody, and (3) the phenomenon of spiritual stagnation. As a foundation for this discussion, the study introduces and defends the terminology and necessity of “Christian Hedonism” as articulated by John Piper, establishing a theological framework for the joy that Christians are called to pursue. Building on this, the significance and theological depth of hymns are explored in relation to Christian Hedonism. The study highlights hymns as a vital and powerful means of realizing true satisfaction and happiness in the Christian life. Furthermore, it offers a comparative analysis of Nietzsche's concept of the “musical life” and the theological essence of Christian hymnody, asserting the latter as a robust alternative. Ultimately, this study argues that the crisis in contemporary Christian culture can be understood through its musical practices, and that the act of singing hymns within worship and daily life is a biblically faithful and spiritually restorative choice.
