디모데후서 2장 22절에서 바울은 ‘청년의 정욕을 피하라’고 디모데에게 권면한다. 개역성경과 개역개정성경의 ἐπιθυμία 오역의 영향으로 오늘날 많은목회자들과 학자들은 젊은 디모데에게 성욕을 피하라는 명령으로 생각하거나 ‘젊은’을 오늘날의 ‘젊은’과 유사하게 이해해왔다. 하지만 이 해석은 세가지 점에서 재고할 필요가 있다. 첫째, 정욕(ἐπιθυμία)이 성적인 욕구만 가리키는가 하는 것이다. 신약성경에서 ἐπιθυμία는 긍정적인 의미에서의 간절한 소망, 인간이 가지는 모든 과도한 부정적인 욕구, 그리고 과도한 성적인욕구를 가리킨다. ἐπιθυμία가 어떤 의미인지는 문맥에 의해 결정되는데 문맥은 두 번째 의미를 가리키는 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 청년이라는 단어의 나이대이다. 주후 1세기 문헌에서 ‘청년’이라는 단어의 나이의 범위는 십대 중반에서 사십대 중반까지를 청년으로 불렀다. ‘청년’이라는 당시의 나이대를고려할 때 성적인 욕구와 바로 연결시키기는 어렵다. 셋째, 그 당시의 인구통계를 고려할 필요가 있다. 디모데가 이 편지를 받았을 때의 나이를 학자들은 30대 중반 정도로 추정한다. 그 당시의 인구통계에 따르면, 출생 시 평균기대 수명이 25세 정도였다. 결혼 연령은 남성은 15세 여성은 13세에 주로 시작했다. 그 당시 기대 수명에서 30대 중반이면 지금 기대 수명으로는 50대후반 정도 될 것이다. 바울의 편지를 받았을 때 디모데의 나이가 성적인 문제가 핵심적인 명령이 될 만큼 젊은 나이는 아닌 것으로 보인다. 바울이 디모데후서 2장 22절에서 ἐπιθυμία를 피하라고 할 때, ἐπιθυμία의 의미는 성욕을 포함하여 목회의 정점에 있는 목회자가 범할 수 있는 모든 종류의 욕심을 피하라는 의미이다. 그 대신에 바울은 디모데에게 의, 믿음, 사랑, 화평을따르라고 명령한다.
Abstract
In 2 Timothy 2:22, Paul exhorts Timothy to “flee youthful desires”. Based on mistranslations in the RKRV and KRV, many pastors today have interpreted this as a command to the young Timothy to avoid sensual desires and to understand “youth” to be similar to today’s “youth”. This interpretation, however, needs to be reconsidered for three reasons. First, does ἐπιθυμία refer to sexual desire? In the New Testament, ἐπιθυμία has three meanings: (1) a strong desire in a positive sense, (2) any excessive negative desire that a person has, and (3) an excessive sexual desire. Therefore, the context can determine which meaning ἐπιθυμία has, and the context seems to point to the second meaning. Second, the age range of the word ‘young man’ varies. In first-century AD literature, the age range for the word young man ranged from mid-teens to mid-forties. Given the age range of “young man” at the time, it’s hard to connect it directly to sexual desire. Third, we need to consider the demography of the time. Scholars estimate Timothy’s age when he received this letter to be in his mid-30s. According to the demographics of the time, Timothy’s age when he received Paul’s letter, then, does not appear to be young enough for sexuality to be a major topic of discussion.
