본 연구는 산업 간 전후방 연관효과를 고려하여 해외직접투자가 본국 경제에 미치는 파급효과를 분석하였다. 기존 연구가 주로 수혜국 중심의 분석 또는 동일 산업 내 영향에 초점을 맞춘 한계를 넘어, 한국의 해외직접투자를 산업 간 연관구조에 따라 동일산업(Horizontal), 후방연계(Backward), 전방연계(Forward)로 구분하고, 각각이 본국의 생산, 수출, 수입에 미치는 영향을 기업 수준에서 실증 분석하였다. 2014년부터 2022년까지의 한국 수출입은행 해외직접투자 자료와 한국은행 산업연관표를 활용하여 Javorcik (2004)의 방법론에 기반한 산업 간 연계된 해외직접투자 지수를 산출하고, 이를 통계청의 기업활동조사 패널데이터와 결합하여 분석을 수행하였다. 실증분석 결과, 동일산업의 해외직접투자는 본국의 생산과 수출에 부정적인 영향을 미쳤으며 특히 중소기업과 내수기업에서 그 영향이 더욱 강하게 관찰되었다. 후방연계 해외직접투자 역시 본국 공급업체의 생산과 수출을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 전방연계 해외직접투자는 국내 생산과 수입을 유의하게 증가시키는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 해외직접투자의 본국 효과가 단일하지 않으며, 산업 간 연관구조 및 기업의 이질성에 따라 상이하게 작용함을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the spillover effects of Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) on the home economy by considering forward and backward linkage effects. While previous research has primarily focused on host country impacts or horizontal investments within the same industry, this paper empirically investigates the distinct impact of Korea's OFDI classified into Horizontal, Backward linkage, and Forward linkage types on domestic production, exports, and imports at the firm level. Using OFDI data from the Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Bank of Korea's Input-Output(IO) tables for the period 2014-2022, we construct an index of inter-industry linked OFDI based on the methodology of Javorcik (2004). The empirical results reveal that Horizontal OFDI has a negative effect on home country production and exports, with this impact being more pronounced for SMEs and domestic-oriented firms. Backward linkage OFDI is also found to decrease the production and exports of domestic suppliers. In contrast, Forward linkage OFDI significantly increases domestic production and imports. These findings suggest that the home country effects of OFDI are heterogeneous, varying according to the structure of industrial linkages and firm characteristics.
