This essay locates the early theorization of dance media by highlighting major thinkers inthe North American dance field. To do so, the study contextualizes the current discourse ofdance media with its cultural and theoretical root. Particularly focusing on the role of danceperiodicals in the formation of the early discourse of dance media, the essay examines theearly writings on dance media was written by Lewis Jacobs, John Martin, Maya Deren, andAllegra Fuller Snyder. In sum, these early thinkers laid the foundation of the discourse ofdance media as they defined, conceptualized, and categorized it.
