비디오 댄스 용어의 혼재 현상을 둘러싼 담론을 분석한 본 연구는 비디오 댄스의 분야가 형성된 맥락과 여러 용어들의 등장 배경, 그리고 주요 용어에 대한 학자들의 논증을 분석함으로써 댄스 미디어의 담론을 넓히고자 했다. 춤과 영상 매체의 예술적 결합을 지칭하는 대표적인 용어로는 film-dance, choreocinema, video dance, screendance, moving-picture dance를 선택했으며, 마야 데런, 존 마틴, 셰릴 도즈, 더글라스 로젠버그, 노엘 캐롤 등의 이론가들의 논의를 통해 각 용어의 의미와 지시 대상, 그리고 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과 용어들은 각각의 차이에도 불구하고 ‘춤 지시어’와 ‘영상 매체 지시어’의 결합과 변용으로 소급될 수 있으며, 그 결합 순서와 단어 선택에 따라 다양한 지시 대상과 함의를 가짐을 알 수 있었다. 이처럼 용어의 혼재 및 정체 현상은 비디오 댄스를 오늘날의 다채로운 댄스/미디어/퍼포먼스/테크놀로지 결합물에 대한 과도기적 형태로 치부되고 있음을 드러낸다. 그러나 비디오 댄스는 지속적으로 창작되고 공유되는 문화적 산물이며, 나아가 유효한 예술 형식으로서 바라볼 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This research examines the nomenclature of what is usually called ‘video dance’. The hybrid form of dance and media is called in many terms, including film-dance, choreocinema, video dance, screendance, and moving-picture dance. Witnessing that the terminology referring to video dance practice has diverged, rather than converged, into diverse terms, I contextualized and analyzed notable terms presented or coined by dance theorists including Maya Deren, John Martin, Sherril Dodds, Douglas Rosenberg, and Noël Carroll. As a result, all the terms can be structured into the format of ‘dance term ＋ media term’, and its variations create diverse meanings and implications for the theorists. The significance of discussing ‘video dance’ in the era of digital tech nology and interactive media lies in that video dance is not a simple precursor of these new technologies, but a cultural practice that still operates in the artworld and shapes the discourse of dance media.
