이 글은 우리나라 초중등학교 교사 교육 과목으로서의 교육철학의 수업 목표와 교수방법상의 원리를 논의하기 위해 작성되었다. 교육철학을 비롯하여 교사 양성 과정 중의 교직과목들이 학교 현장의 필요에 부응하지 못한다는 지적은 오래전부터 있어 왔다. 특히 교육철학은 이와 같은 ‘현장성 결여’라는 비판에 가장 심하게 노출되어 있는 과목들 가운데 하나라고 할 수 있다. 연구자는 그러나 사실은 이와 달리 교육철학은 교육이라는 실천활동을 전문적으로 수행하는 교사들에게 가장 필요한 지식이며 예비교사들이 자율적 전문인으로서의 탁월성을 발휘하는 일에 직결되는 교과목이라는 점을 주장한다. 논문은 크게 세 대목으로 구성된다. 첫째는 교육철학 과목이 교사 양성 제도가 발전하는 역사에서 어떤 위치를 차지했는지를 포함해서 그것의 교수 목표를 교육철학의 이론학적/실천학적 특성을 통해 설명한다. 둘째는 교사 교육 과목으로서의 교육철학 수업에서 이른바 ‘현장성’을 강화한다는 말이 어떻게 이해되어야 하며 그 현장성을 위해서 교육철학 수업은 어떤 방식으로 운영되어야 할지는 논의한다. 그리고 셋째는 교사 양성 과정에서 교육철학을 비롯한 이론적인 지식들이 여전히 중시되어야 하는 이유를, 교사는 현장전문가로서만이 아니라 교육에 관한 학문적 소양이 풍부한 교양인으로서 직무를 수행해야 한다는 점을 통해 제시한다.
Abstract
This essay aims at discussing why philosophy of education is included in teacher education course of Korea and how it should be taught in such days as these days when practicality decides every dimension of realities. It has long been criticized that the basic educational theories―philosophy of education, history of education, sociology of education, psychology of education, etc.―in the teacher education program do not well meet the needs of the “school realities”. It is very worried that especially philosophy of education is one of the courses most seriously exposed to such a criticism. The author, however, argues that the fact is quite the contrary in that philosophy of education is the most important and necessary subject for the teacher candidates who are expected to be able to make ‘educational’ decisions on the basis of their own professional judgment when they work in the schools. The essay consists basically of three parts. First, it explains its aims of instruction in terms of its academic feature being not only a theoretical discipline but practical also, and shows how such feature was considered in the history of the development of teacher education institutions in the 18-9th century Europe and America. Second, it discusses how the term “school realities” of the academic disciplines should be understood and what should be prepared while they are taught in the classrooms of teacher education colleges. And third, it shows why, as they are called, the “theoretical knowledges” including philosophy of education must still be regarded important in teacher education programs, from the perspective that views teachers not only as ‘school-matter specialists’ but well-cultivated intellectuals who are versed in educational academics as well.
