Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest "doubt" as a civic virtue. With dramatical increase of the information, the individuals have been put on difficult situations where they must make decisions on what to accept and what not to amongst the random information. ‘Agent’ often select information based on their intuition, which tends to be biased, before fully examining the authenticity of the information. Selecting information based on one’s belief is a process of forming an opinion. However, the opinion rooted in a personal belief may exclude other opinions, often causing dogmatism and conflict. To address such situation, it seems necessary to discuss a civic virtue. People who attribute the conflict to the lack of faith or the loss of faith may suggest faith as an important virtue. However, this virtue becomes powerless before dogmatism. Ironically, the key to the solution lies in the doubt. Doubt can help avoid the serious conflict by suggesting the possibility that one’s own opinion may be wrong, and that other’s opinion may not be completely wrong. To present some possible solutions to this issue, I organized the paper as follows: First, the study examines the possibility whether the doubt can be classified as a virtue. Second, it divides the doubt into 6 different types and distinguishes virtuous doubts from vicious doubts. Third, it discusses that faith is a dangerous virtue in three different perspectives, while doubt is free from such risks. Rather, the study argues that the doubt leads the agent to calm down by having them reserve their judgment through skeptical exploration. This allows the agent to mediate between conflicting opinions and examine the matters from an objective view. Lastly, the article cites specific examples of the contributions that doubts can make to the society. First, doubt prevents one from falling into a dogma. Second, it resolves the confusion that comes from the conflicting information. Third, it creates a condition that vitalizes the core virtues of the society. Besides, doubt has a popular appeal, and this gives more justification that doubt can be a civic virtue. For the above reasons, I suggest that doubt is worth being encouraged as a civic virtue.
