초록

본 논문은 현대 언어학에서 그 중요성을 결코 간과할 수 없는 이론들 중의 하나인 유표성 이론에 초점을 맞춘다. 유표성 이론은 본래 음운 현상을 설명하기 위해 언어학으로 도입되었으나, 이 영역을 넘어서 형태·통사·의미 현상에 뿐만 아니라, 화용론·정보구조론·심리언어학·사회언어학·언어습득론·언어인지학·오류언어학·병리언어학·언어유형학·언어변천론 등으로도 확대 적용된다. 언어 현상과 관련하여 이 이론은 자연 언어에서 이분-반대칭 대립으로 파악될 수 있는 현상들을 체제적으로 기술·설명하는데 그 장점을 지닌다. 본 논문은 이러한 유표성 이론의 기본 개념, 배경, 유용성을 다루며, 특정 언어 현상을 유/무표성 범주로 포함시키는데 있어 발견학적 내지 진단학적 기준들을 기술한다. 이때 구체적인 자료 분석과 검증을 통해 각 기준들의 타당성 여부를 논하는 것과 유표성 관계가 개개 언어 층위 또는 언어 전반에 어떻게 구체적으로 응용될 수 있는가는 본 논문에서 자세히 논의되지는 않는다. 본 논문은 특정 언어 현상에서 유표성 관계를 확인하는데 시금석이 될 기준들을 정리하여 살펴본다: (i) 특정 자질의 결여성 여부; (ii) 형식상의 복잡성 정도; (iii) 기능 적재량 정도; (iv) 사용 빈도수; (v) 대립의 중화 현상; (vi) 언어 인지 상의 용이성 정도; (vii) 포함관계; (viii) 계열 관계에서 교체 가능성 정도; (ix) 자연성/일반성 정도; (x) 언어보편성 정도; (xi) 언어변천에 대한 민감성 정도; (xii) 언어습득 시 습득 시기; (xiii) 언어장애 시 장애 발생시기; (xiv) 실수 가능성 정도; (xv) 해석의 용이성 정도; (xvi) 정보 수용력 정도. 구조주의 프라그학파, 특히 Trubetzkoy와 Jakobson에 연원하고, 생성음운론에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며, 오늘날에는 자연성 이론이라고도 불리는 유표성 이론에 대한 소개와 기술이 한국 언어학계 전반에 부족한 실정이다. 이 문제는 앞으로 지속적인 관심을 통해 극복되어야 할 것이다. 본 논문이 그런 시도에 작은 도움이 되기를 바란다.
